Eco-Hydrology

An integrated approach to assessments of ecology, hydrology and hydrogeology.

Background

Hafren Water, in association with our partners, has in-depth knowledge of the key factors involved in making eco-hydrological (or hydro-ecological) assessments.

We provide advice for clients upon a wide range of water issues, drawing upon our extensive understanding of water-related issues. We can integrate effectively between the related fields of groundwater, surface water, water-supported ecology, regulatory constraints of possible developments and flooding issues.

Hafren Water staff are experienced in low flow studies for the Environment Agency and research into groundwater-surface water interactions including the hyporheic zone. We have extensive experience of water-based habitat creation and wetland assessment and design.

Services

Services provided include the following:-

  • Low flow assessment on rivers
  • Eco-hydrogeological impact assessments
  • Characterisation of groundwater-surface water interactions (quality and quantity)
  • Flow gauging
  • Investigation of the hyporheic zone
  • Surface water management assessments including the feasibility of SUDs
  • Options and feasibility assessments for the development/improvement of water-dependent habitat
  • Future scenario groundwater modelling
  • Water level management plans
  • Landscape restoration and habitat creation

Practical approaches are taken to examining the water environment which may involve working closely with ecologists and landscape architects to define habitat objectives.  Flood risk alleviation and sustainable drainage design (SUDS) may also be incorporated into wetland habitat creation.
